Who will reign supreme?
Experience competitive, real-time art making during the third annual Iron Artist Competition at Tacoma Art Museum’s Metal-Urge Free Community Festival on Friday, July 31. This multi-faceted event is in partnership with The City of Tacoma and will take place at Tacoma Art Museum and across the street at Tollefson Plaza.
The deadline to sign up to be an Iron Artist Challenger is June 30, 2009. Entry is free. Individuals or teams (4 people maximum) are welcome. Space is limited, so Iron Artist Challenger positions are first come, first served.
This year, participating artists will be asked to create a wearable art masterpiece using materials based on Ornament as Art: Avant-Garde Jewelry from the Helen Williams Drutt Collection, on view June 6 through September 13, 2009, and Loud Bones: The Jewelry of Nancy Worden, on view June 27 through September 20, 2009. Watch, participate, and vote in the next “Iron Artist Tacoma.”
All materials will be provided by Tacoma Art Museum and unveiled at the beginning of the event. A list of
acceptable supplies that you may bring with you to the Iron Artist Challenge will be provided upon registration. Tables will be set up on the perimeter of the museum’s exterior plaza and across the street at Tollefson Plaza. You must be at your table by 5:45 pm for check-in and orientation. The Iron Artist Challege will begin at 6 pm and last for 60 minutes. Judging will take place after the contest, during the fashion show.
- Works quickly, (60 minutes allowed prior to judging).
- Works under pressure despite constant distraction.
- Works with unfamiliar materials (the museum will provide all materials, which will be unveiled at the beginning of the event).
- Can explain/defend his or her work to the panel of judges and public in an attempt to gain their votes.
- Is a good sport. A host will narrate the event and judges will comment about the works throughout the 60-minute period.
- Wants to win. First place will win a $200 Visa gift card and a Tacoma Art Museum membership; second place will win a $100 Visa gift card and two complimentary museum admissions; and third place will win a $50 Visa gift card and two complimentary museum admissions. A People’s Choice Award will be determined by popular vote.
The materials to be used will be presented at the beginning of the event, meaning everyone will have exactly the same 60 minutes to plan and execute his or her piece. Each piece must be wearable and ready to wear by a live model that will display the work on the catwalk during the fashion show. At the end of the allotted time, the artwork will be handed in, finished or not, to be judged by our panel. The panel of judges will meet to select the winning pieces during the fashion show, while the artists are given a post-event interview by the host.
