Experience competitive, real-time art making at Tacoma Art Museum’s third annual artist competition inspired by the TV show “Iron Chef.” Participating artists create wearable art masterpieces using surprise materials in a one-hour high-pressure art extravaganza. Watch, participate, and vote in the next “Iron Artist Tacoma.”
What is an Iron Artist? Someone who:
- Works quickly, (60 minutes allowed prior to judging).
- Works under pressure despite constant distraction.
- Works with unfamiliar materials (the museum will provide all materials, which will be unveiled at the beginning of the event).
- Can explain/defend his or her work to the panel of judges and public in an attempt to gain their votes.
- Is a good sport. A host will narrate the event and judges will comment about the works throughout the 60-minute period.
- Wants to win. First place will win a $200 Visa gift card and a Tacoma Art Museum membership; second place will win a $100 Visa gift card and two complimentary museum admissions; and third place will win a $50 Visa gift card and two complimentary museum admissions. A People’s Choice Award will be determined by popular vote.
On August 10, 2007 Tacoma Art Museum hosted 15 teams of artists and asked who would reign supreme in the Iron Artist Challenge.
Artists had one hour to create an improvised work of art from materials choses by Tacoma Art Museum and inspired by the exhibition "
Sparkle Then Fade." Celebrity judges Andy Warhol, Uncle Sam, Marilyn Monroe, and Lucille Ball judged the competition. See who reigned supreme.

On August 8, 2008, Tacoma Art Museum hosted its second Iron Artist Challenge at the Midsummer's Night Community Festival. Contestants had an hour to create an original work of art from surprise materials. The theme was literature, in celebration of Illuminating the Word: The Saint John's Bible.
