Guided University-Level School Tours

Traditional Docent-led Gallery Tour

Museum docents are specifically trained to provide an enriching and in-depth exploration of current exhibitions and the museum itself. Tours range in duration from sixty to ninety minutes, depending on the type of tour and your viewing preferences, and are lecture-based but interactive, allowing for plenty of questions from your group. Following the guided portion of your tour, stay on to take a closer look at art on view, exploring the museum as a self-guided group. You may choose to focus on a specific current exhibition or take a museum highlights tour, which introduces your students to the architecture of the building and all exhibitions currently on view.

Educator-led Gallery Tour with Hands-on Component

For university groups, we specialize one of our pre-designed K-12 school tours to be relevant and appropriate for your students. Our K-12 school tour program provides thematic guided tours that explore a specific current exhibition and relevant, accompanying art concepts. Tours are typically two hours in length and include time in the galleries as well as time in our Classroom creating a hands-on art project. Click here to view currently available school tour themes, or contact us at education@tacomaartmuseum.org or 253.722.2455 for advice on the best theme for your group.

Self-Guided

For the most freedom in visit length, activities, and galleries visited, lead your class in a self-guided tour. Complete the museum experience by leading your students in independent, exhibition-related, hands-on art activities in the museum's Open Art Studio (instructions and supplies are provided). To receive the school tour program rate, schools must schedule self-guided tours in advance.
