Antoine Predock

Tacoma Art Museum is Antoine Predock’s first contribution to Northwest architecture. As with all of his work, Predock intended for the building to relate to its environment rather than inflict a style upon it. It was inspired by Tacoma’s industrial past and was designed to blend into its surroundings.

Considered one of the top architects in the country, Predock first gained national attention for his work on the Nelson Fine Arts Center at Arizona State University in Tempe, which earned him his first national design award. His acclaimed design for the San Diego Padres Petco Park reinvents the ballpark as a “garden” rather than just a sports complex. Other projects include Austin City Hall in Texas; Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY; the Las Vegas Central Library and Discovery Museum; the Museum of Science and Industry in Tampa, FL; and the Arizona Science Center in Phoenix. He currently is working on two international projects: the National Palace Museum Southern Branch in Taiwan and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

In 2006, Predock was honored with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) most prestigious award, the AIA Gold Medal, and in 2007, he received Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum's Lifetime Achievement Award. He also received both the Distinguished Award of Honor and Merit Award from AIA. He has been presented with the Chicago Architecture Award, the Gran Premio Internacional de la Biennial International de Arquitectura de Buenos Aires, and the Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome.

Predock received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Columbia University, where he studied painting with Elaine DeKooning and served as co-director of a modern dance company. In 2001, Predock received an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from University of New Mexico, and an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from University of Minnesota. Predock has offices in Albuquerque, Los Angeles, and Taiwan.
