About The Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County
Founded in 1888, The Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County is an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and Washington State’s largest open-admission animal welfare agency. Last year, more than 11,578 dogs, cats, and small animals came through the Society’s doors in need of care, from rural Pierce County to Tacoma’s inner-city. The Society proudly operated with a lifesaving rate of 92.65%, considered the gold standard for an open-admission shelter. Low-cost spay/neuter programs, trap-neuter-return programs, pet health care funds, community outreach, behavioral education, and food bank services empower thousands more owners-in-need to keep their pets and end the cycle of animal homelessness and cruelty. More than 350 dedicated volunteers and foster families along with 60 caring professional staff work tirelessly to ensure that no adoptable animal is ever euthanized or goes homeless.
