Northwest Mythologies: The Interactions of Mark Tobey, Morris Graves, Kenneth Callahan, Guy Anderson

May 3 – August 10, 2003

This exhibition provided a critical examination of the relationships of artists Mark Tobey, Morris Graves, Kenneth Callahan and Guy Anderson, whose names in the 1950s became synonymous with the Northwest School. The exhibition, co-curated by Sheryl Conkelton and Laura Landau, was the first presentation that focused specifically on the associations among the four artists-the complex nature of their relationships and the ways in which their various practices were both linked and distinctly separate. It included works from regional public and private collections as well as paintings rarely or never before seen in the Northwest. A fully-illustrated catalogue published by University of Washington Press is on sale in the Museum Store.
