Blue Star Museums Program
May 26—September 1
The Tacoma Museum District joins museums across America to offer free admission to military personnel and their families, in collaboration with the national Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, and the Department of Defense. Free admission for these families is offered from Memorial Day (May 26) through Labor Day (September 1) as part of the Blue Star Museum Program. Leadership support for the Blue Star Museums program is provided by MetLife Foundation through Blue Star Families. 2014 Youth Summer Art Camps
July and August 2014
Tacoma Art Museum offers unique summer camp experiences for youth ages 9–16. Each session, Wednesday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm, is led by the museum educator and special guest artists. Camp participants will create a variety of art, gain inspiration from the museum’s galleries, and explore downtown Tacoma on field trips. Family members are invited to celebrate the art on the last day of each camp at 4 pm.

Glorious Glass
Session 1: Wednesday–Friday, July 16–18, Ages 9–12
Session 2: Wednesday–Friday, July 30–August 1, Ages 13–16
Get hands-on experience blowing your own glass and learn a variety of techniques such as painting on glass, fusing, and mosaic! The museum’s glass art collection will spark the campers’ imaginations. Cost: $260 ($230 for members)Art Adventures
Wednesday–Friday, August 13–15, Ages 9–14
Campers will be introduced to a new art technique each day such as painting, drawing, and printmaking. Local artists will guide lessons and the museum’s art collection will offer inspiration for campers to create their own masterpieces.

Wednesday – Friday, August 27 – 29, Ages 9–16
Round ‘em up! Come explore the western frontier with art, adventures, and storytelling. Guest instructors will guide campers through the thrills of the Wild West.

Summer Camp isn’t just for kids!
Treat yourself to art making with an Adult Summer Camp at Tacoma Art Museum. These unique classes are open to all adults and are designed with educators in mind so they can bring exciting art lessons into the classroom. Each Summer Camp is three hours long and includes a presentation and two art making activities. Clock hours are available for educators. Cost: $35 ($25 for members)

Western Reading Club
Join fellow enthusiasts of the American West in roundtable discussions and hear from guest facilitators about the American West. Book selections will range from historical to contemporary storylines and from fiction to non-fiction. Come get lost in a novel, study up on your American history, and contemplate contemporary issues of the American West. Meet at Relish Cafe at 5:30 pm. Women in the West with Curator Laura Fry

From cinema to advertising, popular images of the American West generally portray a hyper-masculine place with few women. In reality, women held critical roles in the West as independent homesteaders, cattlewomen, artists, voters, and, of course, gunslingers. Join curator Laura Fry to explore the stories of women in the West and in Western American art. Cost: $15 ($10 for members, $5 for students)
Biculturalism with Michael Vicente Perez
Wednesday, July 9, 11 am
Explore the outcomes and realities of biculturalism. Learn how we manage to merge cultures in the Northwest and how we can work to identify with the cultures that are part of us. This lecture is part of Tacoma Art Museum’s Lunch & Learn series. Cost: Free with museum admission.

EXHIBITIONS
Dale Chihuly at Tacoma Art Museum
Currently on view
Dale Chihuly has emerged as one of the most prominent American artists of the last century, all the while remaining closely associated with the Pacific Northwest and, especially, Tacoma. Chihuly began his relationship with Tacoma Art Museum in 1968 in an exhibition featuring works by artists associated with Seattle’s Attica Gallery. This was Chihuly’s first museum exhibition and opened the door for many future exhibitions. Most of the works on view in this gallery were donated by Chihuly to provide visitors a retrospective of his career. A number of additional works by Chihuly are from the 2013 gift by Chihuly’s long-time friend and patron Anne Gould Hauberg. Organized by Tacoma Art Museum.
Ink This! Contemporary Print Arts In The Northwest

Explore the thriving and diverse world of print arts and learn about print arts rich heritage in the Northwest. View 85 works of art created by dozens of talented Northwest print artists. Works in the exhibition showcase a wide variety of printmaking techniques, from time-honored processes such as etching and lithography through installation and digital media. It includes letterpress artists (those that use hand-set type and block-cut imagery to create a variety of works) and artists who hand make books that are in essence small sculptures built to showcase images and artistic techniques. Northwest in the West: Exploring Our Roots
On view through fall 2015
Are there really connections between Northwest art and western art? Northwest in the West draws from the museum’s Northwest art collection to look at how the character of the western United States has shaped regional artistic responses. Though geographically part of the West and an important chapter in the story of the American West, the Northwest has developed a distinct identity while adopting, adapting, or reacting against these western roots in a constantly shifting relationship reflected at the heart of the work of a number of the region’s artists. Photographic Presence and Contemporary Indians: Matika Wilbur’s Project 562

Matika Wilbur, a leading photographer from the Pacific Northwest and Native American (Tulalip and Swinomish Tribes), has traveled more than 100,000 miles in the Western United States over the past year, acquiring extraordinary portraits and remarkable narratives in her quest to visit and photograph people from all 562 federally recognized sovereign Native American tribes. Her provocative work exposes the tenacity and richness of contemporary Native life, and seeks to encourage a shift in consciousness. Tacoma Art Museum is honored to present the inaugural exhibition of Project 562 featuring Wilbur’s Native American portraits, accompanied by stirring audio narratives from select sitters (see Project 562 for further details). Tacoma Art Museum offers a variety of tours for visitors, private groups, and school groups.
Public Museum Overview Tours
For individuals and groups of up to ten people who want to drop in on a pre-scheduled tour. Receive an introduction to the architecture of the building and get an overview of each of the exhibitions on display. Your group will gain an understanding of Tacoma Art Museum’s dynamically paired exhibition and ensure that you get a little taste of everything during your museum visit. Docents are typically available between 11 am and 3 pm daily. Please check with the front desk (253.272.4258) for pricing and to request a tour.
Private Group Tours
Private Group Tours are for groups of two to ten or more and are customized just for you. These tours are available by reservation and must be reserved a minimum of 10 business days in advance. Our tours range in duration from 45 to 60 minutes, depending on the type of tour and viewing preferences of your group. Museum docents (tour guides) are specifically trained to provide an enriching and in-depth exploration of the exhibitions and the museum.

Dale Chihuly Walking Tour
Dale Chihuly is internationally renowned for his work in glass and is celebrated for massive glass installations. Learn more about the artist, his connection to Tacoma, and the evolution of his work on this audio guided walking tour viewing glass installations through downtown Tacoma. Gain a broad view of the artist’s career when experiencing his works on permanent display at Tacoma Art Museum, Union Station, and the Chihuly Bridge of Glass. This tour is available to groups of all sizes.
