Join The Current, An Artist Award for a special curator conversation with LA based artist Umar Rashid and Rebecca and Jack Benaroya curator Victoria Miles. The two will discuss their experiences curating separate exhibitions for Robert Colescott in the year of his centennial, diving into his artistry, vision and legacy. Participants will also hear directly from Rashid about his art practice.
About Umar Rashid
Umar Rashid, also known as Frohawk Two Feathers, is a Los Angeles-based multidisciplinary artist renowned for his vivid reimaginings of colonial histories. Through painting, drawing, sculpture, and storytelling, Rashid constructs alternative historical narratives that intertwine fact and fiction, often spotlighting the experiences of marginalized communities omitted from traditional accounts. His work delves into themes of race, power, empire, and resistance, blending influences from hip-hop culture, ancient mythology, and 18th-century colonial aesthetics.
Rashid lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. He received his BA in cinema and photography from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL. His work was featured at The Huntington and the Hammer Museum as part of the biennial Made in LA 2020: a version. Recent institutional solo exhibitions include Ancien Regime Change 4, 5, and 6, MoMA PS1, Queens, NY (2022); What is the color when black is burned? (The Gold War Part 1), University of Arizona Museum of Art, Tucson, AZ (2018); and The Belhaven Republic (A Delta Blues), University of Memphis Galleries A and B, Memphis, TN (2017).
