In this free workshop, participants will create their own nichos—small, decorative shadow boxes rooted in Mexican folk art traditions. These vibrant pieces can be used to honor a loved one, highlight a favorite quote, or showcase a meaningful image or artwork.
Using accessible materials like foam board and recycled boxes, you’ll construct and personalize your nicho with paint, glitter, rhinestones, old jewelry, stickers, and more. This hands-on session invites you to explore personal storytelling through color, texture, and symbolism.
What is a nicho?
A “nicho” or shrine is used to feature or display a special item or image. They have been used throughout the centuries by many cultures. In many cases, these “nichos” are used for devotional purposes, displaying religious icons. It is like a shadow box, but with a decorative frame or border.
About the artist
Raquel García Martínez is a self-taught painter born and raised in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. Inspired by her creative mother, her father’s road trips across Mexico, and the vibrant folk art of regions like Jalisco, Oaxaca, and Guanajuato, Raquel developed a deep love for painting at a young age. Her work reflects this cultural richness through colorful, folkloric shadow boxes known as nichos, often made with recycled or repurposed materials.
Now based in Seattle for over 30 years, Raquel is a proud mother of four and a grandmother. She has worked at El Centro de la Raza’s Senior Center for 22 years, empowering her community through education, wellness, and art. Her pieces often feature women of color and uplifting messages, aiming to celebrate identity and resilience. Through her art, Raquel hopes to inspire connection and pride, reminding her community: “We are powerful, resilient, and beautiful.”
